The Tucson sangha began meeting in early 2020, and welcomes both newcomers and experienced Buddhist practitioners. We offer Innate Compassion practices to help people realize an unconditional power of care from within that is deeply healing and sustaining. These practices help us become more fully present to ourselves and others within our relationships, service and social action. We foster this by providing powerfully transformative practices of innate compassion and wisdom from Tibetan Buddhism, adapted into forms that are accessible to people of all backgrounds and faiths. These practices empower people with profound contemplative practices that support their aspirations to become better people and to make a better world.
We welcome all people from diverse spiritual traditions (or no particular tradition) who want to access a power of care and compassion that can be more sustaining and inclusive, as well as less subject to bias, mental depletion, and compassion fatigue. These meditations may be of special interest for people in caring roles and professions and for modern Buddhists.
Our regular sessions begin with a brief introductory teaching, followed by a 30- to 40-minute guided meditation, and ending with a discussion. Our facility has chairs, and we have a few cushions and mats available. If you have your own preferred sitting materials, please bring them.
We meet at Studio Space Tucson, 4648 E. Speedway Blvd. (west of Swan, on the South side of the street). The facility is accessible, with parking on-site.

Dawn-Starr Crowther practices as a Licensed Acupuncturist, working with people living with chronic pain, severe illnesses, survivors of trauma, and at end of life. She has practiced Tibetan Buddhism since 1996, when she attended her first retreat with Lama Surya Das. Since that time she has attended, and staffed, many silent retreats with both Lama Surya and Lama John, and has also studied with Charles Genoud, Brendan Kennedy, and Lama Palden Drolma. She has lead meditation groups in Portland from 1997 to 2017, and now is excited to partner with Marge Houey in bringing these compassion practices to the Tucson area.
Since 2001, at a retreat shortly after 9/11--when Lama John stressed the necessity of bringing compassion practices forward in the world--the heart-practices of compassion and lovingkindness have been her main practice and refuge. She is also a Certified Teacher of Stanford University's Compassion Cultivation Training course. She is passionate about creating beauty in the world through art, gardening, and cooking, and loves spending time on long walks with her husband, Dave, and Labrador, Katie-Bird. She also leads medical service trips to Fiji and the South Pacific to bring acupuncture to under-served populations.
These compassion practices are radically life changing -- they foster a quiet revolution of the heart -- which Dawn-Starr is dedicated to manifesting in business and health care. She teaches Innate Compassion and Wisdom Meditation in Tucson, Arizona.
The Tucson FAC sangha and practice group are expected to be established in early 2019. The Tucson sangha will welcome both newcomers and experienced Buddhist practitioners. The sangha will focus on Wisdom and Compassion practices in the Dzogchen tradition, which are highly accessible to the Western mind. These practices are both fresh and inspiring – providing hope and solace in our troubled times -- while being firmly rooted in the ancient Tibetan Nyingma lineage.
Lama John has the extraordinary ability to translate seemingly opaque ancient Tibetan practices into profound practices that are accessible for the Western mind. For me, he has opened a door to deep, spiritual practices that can change ones life.
Being one of the facilitators for the Boston/Cambridge sangha and working with Dawn-Starr to start a Tucson sangha are important aspects of my practice. Also, my Buddhist practices underlie the secular course I teach in the Arizona State Prison in Tucson on emotional intelligence and mindfulness.
